Kirurgens Perspektiv

Today's surgical reports consists of a written textual presentation which is hard to understand for others than the surgeon and the corresponding core-team. One goal is to improve tomorrow's surgical reports by replacing it with a film/video containing 3D-images in high resolution. In this way, the report will be more complete and understandable for a larger audience and it can serve  as a learning plattform useful for e.g. students in medicine, and practicing surgeons preparing for a similar operation. In the future it can also serve as a platform for development of new (autonomous) surgical methods. The multi-disciplinary project involves researchers and practitioners from Engineering, Law and Medicine. The project utilises recent technology advancements e.g. image capturing data compression and robotics, in order to track the precise perspective of the surgeon throughout the operation. Our vision is to provide hospitals with modern surgical reports, facilitating for improved learning in surgical operations and healthcare.

The live surgical field, as the surgeon visually receives it, contains invaluable image information needed for surgical training, clinical consultations, and to support development of surgical robots. However, access to the surgeon's view of the reality is highly restricted because there are currently no technical solutions to collect, reproduce, and share this 3D image information. At the present, only the surgeon can see the organs and pathologies that need surgical attention. 

The goal of this project is to develop technical solutions to collect image data during open haeart surgery, and tp reproduce 3D heart models that can be used for education, clinical consultations, and in the future advance the development of autonomous robotic systems. The overall goal is to achieve increased safety and quality in surgical care. 

Components that will be developed:

1: A camera system for collection of 3D video images. 

2: A plattform for interactive visualisation of the surgical field. 

3: A searchable database with collected data from multiple surgical cases. The database is searchable for participating hospitals (useful for partitioning surgeons and co-team), as well as for participating universities (useful in education of future surgeons). 

4: Additional research proposals in areas such as machine learning algorithms, augmented reality, and decision making, and ultimately autonomous (robotic) surgical methods.
