Title: Computation for impact in Africa’s largest economy

Abstract:
South Africa has benefitted from a wealth of natural resources and strong infrastructure, leading to the highest gross domestic product on the continent. At the same time, the country has some of the highest levels of inequality globally. These challenges, along with long term sustainability goals, places significant constraints on the processing industry. This presentation will investigate applications of modelling and machine learning to support South African industry as well as society.

Bio:
Tobi completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Pretoria and obtained his PhD from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in 2013. He currently leads the Mathematical Modelling and Machine Learning research group at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Stellenbosch University. He is actively involved in IFAC and the current president of the South African Council for Automation and Control.
