Automatic Tuning Based on Transfer Function Estimation

Student: Pablo Tapia Lopez
Advisor: Karl Johan Åström
Date begun: February 1997
Document Number: TFRT-5583

Abstract:

This report describes a method for automatic tuning of PID controllers in closed loop. A limit cycle is generated through nonlinear feedback from the process output to the controller reference signal. The frequency of this oscillation is near the critical frequency of the loop transfer function. The amplitude and frequency of the oscillation are estimated as well as process gain in steady state. PID parameters are calculated adaptively considering factors such as load disturbances, measurement noise and process dead times. The approach is compared to methods proposed by Åström and Hägglund, Schei, and Woodyatt and Middleton.

Date begun: October 1996
Document Number: TFRT-5581

Abstract:

The paper describes an adaptive local model networks strategy intended for control of a class of nonlinear, time-varying systems. Some recent progresses in multiple model identification, local model networks and switching are combined to a very powerful and flexible strategy. The method does not need much more computational effort than a conventional adaptive control scheme. More memory are however needed. The paper describes all aspects of the method: robust real-time controller design, robust real-time multiple model identification, local model networks and switching. A simulation example of the high performance vehicle speed control is also presented. The work has done as a part of an ESPRIT III project called Neural Adaptive Control Technology.

Abstract:

Volvo Excavator AB has problems controlling the number of revolutions per second, in the diesel engine of an excavtor, when it is running. To solve this problem the different processes controlling the energy-flow in an excavator are mathematically identified. These models are later put together to enable simulations of a running excavator on the computer. The different models that needs to be identified are the diesel engine, the proportional valve and the hydraulic pumps. When the different models where put together a few reasons for the earlier problems were discovered. New identifications are expected on the modified hydraulic pump using this work as a manual.

A Real Time Control Language for the Pålsjö Environment

Student: Anders Blomdell
Advisor: Karl Johan Åström
Document Number: TFRT-5578

Abstract:

Traditionally computer based real-time control systems have often been coded from scratch, involving a substantial effort. Recently the adoption of domain specific frameworks has made it easier to implement real-time control systems. Pålsjö is one such framework implemented at the Department of Automatic Control in Lund. During the construction of the Pålsjö real-time control system framework, it was obvious that ordinary programming languages are not an optimal choice for the implementation of control algorithms. It was also apparent that the algorithms got intermixed with framework specific code. A new language was therefore proposed and implemented. A properly designed language with data-types and other abstractions aimed at control engineers simplifies the coding of algorithms. Since the code executed by the framework is generated by a compiler, the structures in the framework can be designed for maximum performance instead of ease of use. The reuse of algorithms in a new or modified framework is also simplified since only a new back-end for the compiler is required. The main focus of the thesis are the syntactic and semantic elements of the proposed language, but a brief introduction to the compiler structure is also given as an aid for the implementation of new back-ends.

Advisor: Leif Hansson(Kemira Kemi AB)
Industrial Partner/Sponsor: Kemira Kemi AB
Date begun: September 1996.
Document Number: TFRT-5577

Abstract:

An effort is made to model the steam generation at Kemira Kemi's sulfuric acid plant in Helsingborg, Sweden. The making of sulfuric acid starts with the oxidation of elementary sulfur in an exothermic reaction. The released energy is used in the waste heat boiler to produce high pressure steam. A model of this process consisting of burner, waste heat boiler and drum with controllers has been constructed. In the development of this model the theory of combustion and heat transfer is studied. The shrink-and- swell phenomenon, affecting the drum level dynamics, and the consequent control problem is given special attention. Modeling is done in Omola, an object-oriented modeling language, and simulation in OmSim. The developed plant model is simulated and the results are found in good resemblance with the actual plant. However, no real validation has been made.

Manual Control of Unstable Systems

Student: Sabina Brufani
Advisor: Karl Johan Åström
Date begun: June 96
Document Number: 5576

Abstract:

Automatic control is increasingly used in mission critical applications. The reason for this is the potential benefits and the fact that control engineering is now able to deal with complex systems. Control of high performance aircrafts is a typical example. Considerable benefits can be obtained by having an aircraft that is unstable in certain flight conditions and providing stability with a control system. The unstable flight conditions typically include the low speed conditions that occur during take off and landing. The aircrafts have hydraulic actuators that saturate for large signals or signal rates. Since the feedback loop is broken in saturation the unstable states may diverge to situations which cannot be recovered. The presence of a pilot is yet another complication because the pilot may also drive the system unstable through manual control actions. Design of control systems for such situations is a significant challenge. Aircraft manufacturers have encountered severe difficulties because of this problem which has led to severe delays of projects. The design of control laws for unstable systems that make it impossible for the pilot to drive the system unstable while maintaining good handling qualities is a challenging problem. The goal of this thesis is to develop insight into this problem. A strongly simplified case that captures the key elements of the problem is first solved to get some insight. This shows that it is possible to develop a hybrid strategy which has interesting problems. A more realistic problem is simultaneous stabilization and control of the pivot of an inverted pendulum. This problem is nice because it also allows easy verification in the laboratory. The problem is investigated and control strategies are designed by combining several different strategies using the hybrid approach. The properties of the strategies are illustrated by simulation. Finally we make a preliminary attempt at applying the ideas to the flight control problem. The conclusion of the work is that the approach taken appears promising and worthy of further studies.

Control of an Oscillatory System

Student: Mikael Danielsson
Advisor: Karl Johan Åström
Advisor: Anders Wallen
Date begun: September 1996
Document Number: TFRT-5575

Abstract:

Systems with structural resonances are difficult to control if fast responses are required. Rapid changes in the control signal may excite the resonant modes. In digital control with zero-order-hold sampling there will be very rapid changes in the control signal. A way to deal with the problem is to use predictive first-order-hold sampling instead. The control signal is then linear between the sampling instants. This thesis investigates trade-offs in control of a typical oscillatory system. PI, PID and state feedback controllers are examined analytically or by simulations with a model of the considered system. A comparison is also made between zero-order-hold and predictive first-order-hold sampling.

Compensation for jitter in real-time systems

Student: Jonas Bygren

Advisor: Johan Nilsson
Date begun: September 1, 1995
Document Number: TFRT-5574

Abstract:

For a process with random time delays, it is possible to find the t optimal control law with dynamic programming. This control law is complicated and is therefore of interest to find simpler suboptimal controllers. The simplest one is the standard LQG-regulator that ignores the varying time delays. It appears however that this controller has bad stability properties or give bad performance. In the thesis two suboptimal controllers are given, which are compared with the optimal controller in some examples.

Java-based Picture Editor for Control Systems

Student: Anders Henriksson
Advisor: Göran Ekström ABB
Advisor: Karl-Erik Årzen
Industrial Partner/Sponsor: ABB Network Partner
Date begun: Augusti 1996
Document Number: TFRT-5573

Abstract:

The Java programming language promises to be platform independent. This feature makes graphical user interface (GUI) development in Java Interesting. The problem addressed in this paper is whether Java can be used as a core in a new man-machine interface for power control systems. In order to get an answer to this problem the main objective of the thesis has been a evaluation of the Java-technology based on the building of a prototype editor/viewer application. The editor part should allow design of control pictures based on information supplied by a real-time control system. The result is a fully functional editor/viewer application that can be down-loaded from any WWW-browser, that supports Java. The prototype has been built using the OMT (Object Modeling Technique) method. The prototype supports multiple documents, i.e., many editor and viewer windows. There is a possibility to connect picture elements to a real-time database for information updating. Control pictures generate their own Jawa code, they can be zoomed and panned, and the design is prepared for information zooming. The development tool used, Symantec Cafe, as well as some Java performance related questions have also been investigated.

Speech Coding Using Orthonormal Basis Functions

Student: Sven Hedlund
Advisor: Björn Wittenmark
Advisor: Brett Niness (Newcastle)
Date begun: September 96
Document Number: TFRT-5572

Abstract:

Vocoders are coders that are designed to encode human speech efficiently by using analytical models of the human vocal system. The process of encoding involves dividing speech audio into many short segments, then finding the parameters that cause the model to generate the closest approximation to the sound in each segment. When using linear predictive coding, LPC, compression is accomplished by modeling the speech signal in each segments as an AR process and encoding the model parameters rather than the speech. Decoding consists of sending the parameters to the model to recreate the sequence of audio segments. The adaptive all-pole filter used for linear prediction approximates the true physical configuration of the human vocal tract, but with the nasal tract left out. The contribution from the nasal tract suggests the need for a pole-zero model instead of the conventional one. In this report, we try to improve the traditional LPC by adding fixed zeros to the vocal tract filter. Since the zeros are fixed, they will not increase the parameters needed to represent the model. Experiments that are made to determine how successful these ideas are when it comes to perception by the human ear (i.e. sample, code, decode and listen), show that one can not achieve significantly better speech quality with any configuration of the added zeros.

Performance Improvement of PI-Control Using Nonlinear Feedforward

Student: Bernd Trageser
Advisor: Karl Johan Åström
Advisor: Mikael Johansson
Date begun: September 1996
Document Number: TFRT-5571

Abstract:

Processes whose dynamics include large time delays have poor control performance and slow responses to set-point changes. The aim of this thesis is to improve the set-point response by augmenting standard feedback control with a nonlinear feedforward. The feedforward approximates the input-output characteristics of the plant. It can be realized as an universal function approximator such as a neutral network. In this way, the feedforward directly computes the control required to obtain the desired output in steady-state. A standard PI-controller is used in the feedback loop to force the control deviation to zero, taking into account the effects of model uncertainties, load disturbances and disturbances to the controlled variable. The same method can be used to include feedforward from measurable disturbances. Methods for automatic tuning of the PI-controller and the nonlinear functions are presented. The PI-controller can be tuned by standard automatic-tuning experiments, while the nonlinear feedforward compensation is learned through a series of closed-loop step-response experiments. This gives a simple and automated way of designing nonlinear feedforward compensators. The power of the proposed method is illustrated by a number of simulations.

Identifiering och simulering av pappersmaskin (Identification and Simulation of Paper Machine)

Student: Patric Nilsson
Advisor: Rolf Johansson
Date begun: July 1996
Document Number: TFRT-5570

Abstract:

Increasing speed of paper machines, increasing quality standards and high prices on pulp have increased the demand on the automatic control of the paper machines. The objective is to keep uniform basis weight and paper ash in production of a specific quality and to minimize the time spent in changing qualities. Different proposals of rebuilding the machines and changing the structure of the controlling systems is of interest. At evaluation of different proposals in the perspective of automatic control is a simulation tool valuable.

A model of PM2 at Stora Nymölla AB has been brought forward and a simulation tool has been constructed in simulink. The physical part of the machine has been modelled. Concentrations are modelled dynamically and flows are modelled stationary. Identification of the real process has been made to determine the dynamic characteristics.

The model can with good results be used to test and evaluate different strategies of automatic control and with some restrictions be used to evaluate rebuildings.

Modelling and Simulation of Sound Effects in Mechanical Systems

Student: Tobias Antius
Advisor: Sven Erik Mattsson
Advisor: Hilding Elmqvist
Industrial Partner/Sponsor: Dynasim
Document Number: TFRT-5568

Abstract:

Facilities to present simulation results as animations on the Internet have been developed. They can take simulation results from the modeling and simulation environment Dymola and convert them to a Virtual Reality Model Language (VRML) representation, which is the new Internet protocol for displaying three dimensional graphical worlds with sound effects.

Mathematical models for sound has been developed in Dymola. The model for a string gives good results. However, it is much worse to model a membrane. Sound models must have high bandwidths, which require fine discretizations, which make the models large and complex. Furthermore, sound interacts in complex ways with the environment on its way to our ears. Filters that compensate for the effects that are introduced during the propagation of the sound from the source to the receiver have been developed with good results. Software to output a general variable to a sound-card under Windows has been developed.

The VRML has shown to be a great tool to model advanced virtual reality scenes including both sound and animation. In combination with Dymola, VRML can be used to present dynamic behavior including both animation and sound.

Robustness Analysis of a Wind Power Plant

Student: Egil Overaa
Advisor: Sven Erik Mattsson
Advisor: Anders Rantzer
Document Number: TFRT-5567

Abstract

Stability and performance properties of a wind power plant are analyzed. In particular, the nonlinear effects of time-varying wind are considered. The stability analysis makes use of the Nyquist theorem, the Circle Criterion, and a generalization for periodic perturbations. The robust performance analysis is done by optimization of linear matrix inequalities.

The stability was not found to be a problem, but the specified performance was difficult to prove.

Abstract

The purpose of this master thesis is to create a computer program that presents some theoretical aspects of control theory using dynamic pictures, which show directly the influence of different parameters on a control system. It creates an interactive environment aided by virtual processes that use computer animation and real time simulation to enhance the learning process.

All the implementation has been done using Matlab and its graphical user interface. The use of Simulink was avoided in order to make faster animations.

Catalytic Reduction in the Ship Engines

Student: Torbjörn Aukland
Advisor: Per Holmström (ABB Fläkt Marine AB)
Advisor: Tore Hägglund
Document Number: TFRT-5565

Abstract

Recent years intensive measures of land-based emissions have increased the share contributed from ships and other marine activities. The main problem here is the nitrogen oxides emitted from todays fuel-optimized diesel engines used by the majority of ships.

ABB Fläkt Marine is one of the very few companies that provides a solution to emissions on nitrogen oxides. This is made with a technique called Selective Catalytic Reduction using a substance, urea, which is injected into the exhausts to react with the nitrogen oxides in the reduction catalyst to form water, nitrogen and carbon oxide. The amount of injected urea into an exhaust pipe is controlled by measuring the momentarily load of the engine. however, the optimal injection rate tends to drift slowly over longer periods of time causing the actual injection rate to be either too low or too high. The adjustments of these trends have so far been made manually by the company's service engineers, but with just a few more plants of this kind installed on ships around the world this would soon become too time consuming.

The purpose of this master thesis project has therefore been to suggest how these trend adjustments could be carried out automatically. The measurements, mainly made on a ferry between Sweden and Denmark, show a very different dynamical behavior of the catalyst depending on whether the actual injection rate is too low or too high. They also show that variations in the engine's load have to be taken into consideration in some way during the adjustments. The suggested method uses time series analysis and prediction while searching for the optimal injection rate.

Control of Roling Missile based on Measurement Information from Accelerometers

Student: Stefan Delin
Advisor: Johan Nilsson
Advisor: Ola Rönn (Bofors AB)
Sponsoring organisation: Bofors AB
Document Number: TFRT-5564

Abstract

This report is a study on placement of accelerometers in a rolling missile. A Kalman filter is used for estimation of some states of the rolling missile. The rolling angle is assumed to be known. The states are fed back to give the missile desired dynamics. Reference signals in the form of desired accelerations are also introduced.

The report shows that one transverse measuring accelerometer gives enough measure information to make estimation of the states needed for feedback possible. The estimation errors are only slightly lower if two transverse measuring accelerometers, placed perpendicular against one another, are used instead of one. Along the axis of symmetry of the missile there is an interval, in the front of the missile, where accelerometers should not be placed due to poor estimation. Bias errors in the accelerometers are efficiently eliminated by bias estimating states. Turbulent wind must be modeled in the Kalman filter to get good estimation of the angle of attack and the side-slip angle. In the controlled missile the gyro-coupling, due to the roll of the missile, is low. The small effects that are left of the gyro-coupling can be further reduced with suitable controllers. Reference signals can be introduced in the controller by feedforward of the states and control signals from a filtered reference signal. The feedforward can be done static without considerable deterioration of performance.

The Effect of Friction on Stabilization of an Inverted Pendulum.

Student: Carl Fredrik Abelson
Advisor: Henrik Olsson
Advisor: Karl Johan Åström
Document Number: TFRT-5563

Abstract

This thesis investigates frictional effects on the stabilization of a rotating inverted pendulum. Because of friction, limit cycles arise when trying to stabilize the inverted pendulum. The stabilization is done using linear state feedback. For estimation of the states, Kalman filters are used. Both real-time experiments and simulations are performed.

Two friction models are used, one classical with stiction and Coulomb friction, and one advanced and dynamic, the LuGre model. These are identified by comparing limit cycles from the real process with limit cycles obtained through simulations. Since the inverted pendulum is an unstable process with fast dynamics, it is sensitive to parameter changes, and thus it is difficult to get good results. Model-based friction compensation is also tried. This results in reduced limit cycles.

Control of Unstable Systems with Input and Rate Saturations

Student: Michelangelo Calabresi
Advisor: Karl Johan Åström
Document Number: TFRT-5562

Abstract

Input saturation and rate limitations are important, particularly for unstable systems. The impact of a saturation and a rate limiter on a plant controlled with a PID controller is one problem. Anti-windup techniques provide good solutions for systems with saturation but unfortunately they do not work so well for systems with rate limitations. Modifications of the conventional anti-windup schemes re presented to overcome these problems. A second problem deals with the phase lag induced by rate limiters and several filters are presented and compared showing different kind of performances for each one. Analysis shows that no filter is superior in all respects. The third problem deals with unstable multi variable systems. It is based on a linear model of the pitch motion of the aircraft JAS-39 Gripen. Modern fighter planes have highly unstable dynamics and the limited forces produced by the aerodynamic surfaces must match diverging actions caused by the intrinsic aerodynamic instability. Several techniques are used to design a controller that improves the handling qualities of the plane while avoiding that the pilot looses control of the plane. Hybrid control has been implemented to provide smooth transition between a normal flight condition and a critical one and appears to be a promising way to deal with this kind of problems. Hybrid control can also overcome the nonlinear behavior of a real airplane at high angles of attack.

Comparison of two Friction Models

Student: Magnus Gäfvert
Advisor: K. J. Åström
Document Number: TFRT5561

Abstract:

Friction modelling is a delicate problem which poses several challenges to control engineers. This work focuses on two recent models which describe friction with nonlinear dynamical systems: The Lugre model, and the model of Bliman & Sorine.

Comparisons are made concerning friction phenomena captured, computational issues, identification of model parameters and behavior at zero-crossing of the velocity. Properties are illustrated by simulations. New results on stability and passivity for the Lugre model are presented. Experiments are carried out to validate the models. Limit cycles are investigated by describing function analysis. The impact of a dynamic friction model on friction induced limit cycles is discussed. Both models give reasonable results in describing function analysis, and it is concluded that dynamic models are superior to static models when it comes to reproducing limit cycles. The Lugre model exhibits a richer behavior in terms of friction phenomena. The Bliman & Sorine model could be problematic to use because of poor damping properties. The damping problems for the Bliman & Sorine model turns out to affect overall model behaviour in a complex way.

Modelling and Control of an Electric Arc Furnace

Student: Rui Pedro P.C. Paiva

Document Number: TFRT-5560

Abstract:

In an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), electrical energy is the main source of power used when melting scrap. In order to optimize the power consumption, the EAF must be properly understood. Also, since the main source of power are the electric arcs, its electrical and thermal properties must be analyzed. The arc power depends on its length and it is adjusted by moving the electrodes. In order to maintain the desired power levels, efficient control of the electrode movements is required.

This thesis presents an object-oriented model of the EAF where its main subsystems, namely the electrical system, the electrode positioning dynamics and the disturbances are analyzed separately. Furthermore, a fuzzy P-like impedance controller, based on the model implemented, is also presented.

Improvements of a PID Controller

Student: Edith Dufrene

Advisor: T. Hägglund
Document Number: TFRT-5559

Abstract:

This paper describes three improvements for a PID controller. These improvements have been created with SattLine, which is an object-oriented, distributed process automation system developed by Alfa Laval.

These improvements are a compensator for static friction in control valves, an interpolation between the PID values when the system is non linear and the creation of a table to save different gain schedules.

The two first improvements have been tested in simulation and in a plant, Danisco Sugar, the third one has just been tested at Alfa Lval.

Abstract:

Industrial robots are used/configured/programmed by several different types of users/programmers. The control system should preferably expose a uniform view for each programming situation. Such views were defined by the Open Robot Control (ORC) architecture, developed within the department in an earlier project.

This project will refine and evaluate some high level robot programming principles. First, earlier prototype implementations will be merged together to a more complete system. Secondly, the low-level control will be verified for an available ABB IRB-6 robot. Third, the system will be improved to allow robot programming languages and interpretors to be exchanged at run-time. It should also be possible to introduce new control loops based on externals sensors. The goal is to let the robot perform contour following; user-friendly programmed using the developed features.

Abstract:

In the control of mobile autonomous robots a number of static control-architectures with their own characteristics, for example classical hierarchic and parallel overloading (behavior-based) control-architectures, can be found. Experiences have shown that the control-architecture is as important as the control-algorithms and that there is a need of combining and changing control-architectures in run-time.

A structure-adaptive control architecture alters the information- and control-flow in run-time in order to obtain a control-structure which changes depending on the actual mission and states.

The above concept is supported by the real-time-robot-operating-system CAIC (Cooperative Architecture for Intelligent Control). CAIC was implemented and used to control two mobile miniature manipulators (Khepera-robots). The two robots were able to cooperatively grip, raise and transport a rectangular object (the spacing-piece in the Cranfield Assembly Benchmark). They communicated with local IR-communication to send command and acknowledgments.

Abstract:

This project will evaluate a new type of equipment for producing different kinds of fruit beverages. The equipment consists of a number of pumps, valves, tanks and mixers and blends up to six components to get the perfect customer's beverage. The equipment is to be represented in the Omola modelling language. To establish the accuracy of its performance it will then be simulated in Omsim and submitted to various predictable outer influences. The accuracy is defined as the standard deviation of juice concentration.

Abstract:

Industrial robots are used/configured/programmed by several different types of users/programmers. The control system should preferably expose a uniform view for each programming situation. Such views were defined by the Open Robot Control (ORC) architecture, developed within the department in an earlier project.

Another development is the so called Pålsjö system, a DDC package supporting rapid control prototyping. Control blocks are expressed in an imperative block definition language, using a C/C++ style for pure computations. A run-time system supports interactive creation and execution of control blocks.

This project will refine and evaluate some low-level robot control and programming principles, and a GUI to the Pålsjö system will be outlined and possibly implemented. First, the current version of the robot control system (based on an available ABB IRB-2000 robot) will be extended concerning the real-time control, the supervision of the system, and the control engineering tools. That will allow control experiments to be performed in a safe and efficient way. Secondly, the low-level control will be improved and tuned using the tools developed. The goal is to let the robot perform a force control task, or to stabilize an inverted pendulum mounted on the end-effector, using the Pålsjö system.

Application of Subspace-based Methods of System Identification

Student: Jonas Ekblad (F91)

Advisor: Rolf Johansson
Date begun: 1 Nov 1995
Document Number: 5556

Abstract:

A major drawback with the ARMAX model approach to identification of multi-variable systems is the difficulty of model class selection and overparametrization of fractional models which, in turn, precludes the use of many numerical optimization techniques to solve an identification problem A major obstacle is that there is no unique parameter set that corresponds to an input-output relationship, hence there are no unique convergence points of optimization.

Subspace-based methods offer an alternative approach but the methods are prone to error for low signal-to-noise ratios. An experimental evaluation of noise sensitivity of subspace-based identification applied to postural dynamics is considered.

Abstract:

The four degree of freedom (4 DOF) controller provides an approach for design of integrated control and diagnosis systems. The problem is formulated on standard interconnection form and can be attacked with different control design methods, e.g., $Hinfty$ or $H2$ control.

This thesis has investigated the 4 DOF controller in combination with $Hinfty$ and $mu$-design. Two problems have been studied, a literature example and diagnosis of a simulated inverted pendulum. Special focus has been put on the selection of weighting filters.

Speed Control of a Switched Reluctance Motor

Abstract:
This thesis gives an introduction to the switched reluctance motor. A model is developed in Simulink to investigate its nonlinear characteristics. A controller is designed for the Simulink model. The major concern for the controller is to obtain a smooth torque. Normally the current is measured for control, but in this case the current is not used, which means that an inner loop is lost. The following gain scheduling principle for the speed controller is proposed. Operating points for the speed and the torque are defined, around which the system is linearized. Two parallel controllers are implemented. A shape controller to minimize the torque ripple, and a PI-controller to handle reference changes and load disturbances. The shape controller produces a voltage shape at a level determined by the PI-controller. The parameters of the controllers are tuned according to the current operating point.

Adaptive Control of Systems with backlash

Student: Mattias Grundelius
Advisor: Karl Johan Åström

Document Number: TFRT-5549

Abstract:

Backlash is common in mechanical and hydraulic systems. It severely limits the overall system performance. Many mechanical solutions have been developed to overcome backlash, for example by using spring-loaded split gear assemblies or dual motor systems. These mechanical solutions can satisfactorily handle the backlash problem but they give rise to other problems like decreased accuracy and reduced control speed. They are also more expensive, they consume more energy and they increase the weight of the system. Therefore it would be very nice to find ways to do backlash compensation that is not based on mechanical devices. In this thesis it is attempted to approach the problem by adaptive control. Two different types of backlash compensations are examined; one linear, phase lead compensation, and one nonlinear, backlash inverse. The nonlinear backlash compensation gives better performance and is used in the controller. The parameter values in the backlash inverse are crucial to the control performance and they need to be estimated if the backlash is unknown or varying. Two different schemes for estimating the backlash parameters has been considered, a model reference adaptive system and a recursive least squares estimator. Beth methods require that the state of the backlash (i.e. if it is in the dead-zone or not) is known. The recursive least squares estimator is used in the adaptive controller because it converge faster. The recursive least square estimator is expanded so that the plant parameters can be estimated too. The adaptive controller is tested by simulation on a second order plant with known or unknown parameters and an unknown backlash acting on the input of the system. The simulations show that both the backlash and the plant parameters can be estimated if you know the state of the backlash.

An Experimental Platform for DC-cable Interaction with Ship Steering

Student: Staffan Nilsson

Date begun:
Document Number: TFRT-5546

Abstract:

HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) cables are often used to transmit electrical power between two areas separated by water. When a ship, equipped with a ship steering automatic pilot containing a magnetic compass, passes such a cable it will deviate from its intended course and may even follow the cable.

The objective of this final master thesis was to build an experimental model. This model should be used to verify simulations of ships passing a HVDC cable. It includes a radio controlled boat, an automatic pilot, a magnetic compass and a position monitoring system. Some full-size exerpiments have been performed, but they were very expensive. This is why an experiment model would be most appreciated.

We want an automatic pilot which controlled the boat heading using a magnetic compass as the input. After having tried different solutions for the automatic pilot we chose a model which consisted of two micro controllers situated on the boat.

The position monitoring system uses pulses of audible sound. Four microphones detect the sound, each with a certain time delay proportional to the distance from the boat. From the differences in time delay the boat position can be calculated.

Experiments show that the model behavior was as expected, the boat deviated from its course and in the worst cases followed the cable.

Document Number: TFRT-5547

Abstract:

IEC 1131-3 is a standard for programming languages used in programmable controllers (PLC). it consists of four language paradigms, two graphical and two test based, and sequential function charts (SFC).

This master thesis describes a prototype implementation of the Function Block Diagram language combined with SFC. Different function blocks and SFC elements are implemented as a number of classes and code is written to execute them.

We have spent most of the project on issues of execution order which are not well specified in the standard. The objects are sorted into lists and executed. Algorithms for local or global sort are implemented and evaluated. We have also discussed other execution methods.

The implementation is done using the graphical and object oriented expert system G2 as a prototype tool.
