A Frame Work for Process State Transitions: Grade Changes

In modern chemical process industry, process state transitions, or grade changes, are common operations. For example, for a paper machine, a common operation is to change the surface weight of the produced paper. In this case it is of importance that the transition to the new grade is done fast, but without a breakdown as a result. This paper addresses this problem by combining optimization techniques and a tool for sequential control, JGrafchart. The paper also contains an example, where the proposed method has been applied to the quadruple-tank process.
